Every culture that has lived with cacao has a story about where it came from. This is the Bribri story.
The Bribri are an indigenous people of the South Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, one of the few remaining communities where cacao is still cultivated and processed in alignment with ancestral tradition. We have worked alongside their farming communities for over a decade, and this story — told to us in the forests of Talamanca — is the one we carry with us into every batch of cacao we process.
We share it here with respect, as it was shared with us.

**Sibu and the World He Made**
Sibu is the creator of all — the architect, the child who sets games in play and watches to see what will happen. Sibu is the sloth. He rests in his celestial hammock all day and sends other beings to carry out his work. He knows exactly which animal, god, or goddess is suited for each task.
Sibu created the world full of riches, food, tools, and medicine. The Bribri people he created last, from seeds of corn. For them he built the Usure — the conical houses — to live in.
When the work of creation was done, Sibu said:
*"I have given you everything in mother nature to care for and use. I have given you all the wisdom. Do not call on me for help — I am already in you, and in everything around you."*
The Bribri do not have designated days of worship or prayer. Gratitude, connection, and respect for mother nature live in every act. It is said that a Bribri who does not feel love for the natural world cannot call himself Bribri, regardless of bloodline.

**The Five Sisters of Cacao**
When Sibu looked at his creation, he felt the urge to give humanity one more gift — something that would help people remember their humility and gratitude, their connection to the living world, in case they ever forgot.
He searched for the right gift and thought of the Cacao family.
The Cacao family were five sisters, five goddesses: **Slo, Squalo, Wero, Tsiru, and Oshwo**. Sibu went down into the jungle to find which of them could carry the gift he had in mind.
---
**The Old Man's Visit**
Sibu disguised himself as an ugly, slouching old man and arrived at the hut of the Cacao Sisters.
The three elder sisters — Squaro, Huero, and Sera — were tall and beautiful, and entirely taken by their own pride. When the old man asked to be let in, they took their hammocks and tied them high in the rafters, so he couldn't reach them.
Tsiru was different. She was short, quiet, and unassuming. She prepared the old man a cacao drink and welcomed him.
He asked her to marry him. She agreed.
Squalo laughed so hard at this that she fell from her hammock — and to this day, the Squalo cacao falls from the tree and releases a gas as it lands. The other sisters laughed so hard they became tangled and stuck in their hammocks.
Tsiru left the usure with the old man. The moment they stepped outside, he shifted form and revealed himself in his true, shining image.
The other sisters came running, begging to be chosen instead. They were so much more beautiful.
Sibu looked at Tsiru and said:
*"Tsiru, with her humbleness and good heart, will be in charge of the gift to humanity."*

**The Gift**
That gift is cacao.
Not cacao as a flavoring, or a commodity, or a trend. Cacao as a living medicine — a carrier of understanding, gratitude, and connection to the earth and to each other.
That is the cacao we work with. That is the cacao we source from the descendants of the people who have held this story for generations.
When you receive a block of Cacao Magic, you receive something that has passed through many hands — all of them holding that intention.
